HOSES & STINKY SLINKIES

Our basic RV sewer set-up. In addition to the “classic” sewer hose and hose support, we also have two Rhino Blasters to help rinse the tranks and a Wye sewer fitting to account for our two gray holding tanks.

Like most RVers, we carry a sewer hose (actually several of them), sewer support, and a clear sewer elbow.

Our Entegra Accolade has two gray holding tanks. As such, when we are staying at a campground long term, our sewer set-up is a two-fer. This photo shows the basic configuration.

Sewer Hose Support

This helps angle the sewer hose so that the black and grey water property discharge from the hose. We’ve also found that a gutter spout can work well too.

Rhino Blaster Pro

We added this Rhino Blaster tank rinser to help clean out the tanks. We have two of them — one for each of our two gray holding tanks.

Wye Sewer Fitting

Because we have two grey tanks and one black tank, this Wye RV fitting comes in handy when we are staying somewhere for a long time andwe don’t want to move the stinky slinky. (Oh, and WHY is this fitting spelled “Why” and not “Y”?)

Drinking Hose

We like the flexibility of this hose (it does not kink like most PVC hoses). Be sure and make sure the hose you select is BPA-free as well.

Heating Cable

In freezing temperatures, we use this heating cable in the wet bay area to help keep our water pump from freezing. It can also be used to wrap around the fresh water hose to prevent it from freezing.

Every RVer needs to treat the “black tank.” Here’s a couple of treatment products that we like:

Kleen Tank and other experts recommend using a Pine-Sol and Calgon mixture for black tank treatments.

Their formula is as follows:

  • Mix 40 ounces of PINE-SOL® with 8 ounces of Calgon Ageless Bath Pearls in a gallon jug.

  • Top off with enough water to fill.

  • Shake gently. Allow foam to die down.

  • Use four to eight ounces (as directed) in each tank (more in especially hot weather or if your tanks will be filling up slowly over time).

We’ve tried the Pine-Sol / Calgon treatment, but did not think that it worked very well. In fact, we thought that the the mixture did not get rid of odors as well has Happy Campers.

July 2024 Update: After having our tanks professionally cleaned by Kleen Tank, we have gone back to using the Pine-Sol/Calgon mixture to see if it works better. Kleen Tank told us that because we started their recommended treatment AFTER our tanks had already built up some sludge, that was the problem. We try to keep you posted on the results.
In the meantime, if you have tried a homemade black tank treatment like this, we would love to know whether it was successful.

MACERATOR

We placed this sleeving around our macerator hose to try to protect it. Ultimately, we decided to remove the macerator from our RV. Check out the blog Macerator Removal: Why Do it?, including how Kasie re-plumbed the space so that the sewer hose never has to go inside the wet bay.

OTHER SEWER & WATER DEVICES AND TOOLS

Cyclone Sewer Vent

Our toilet vent pipe was cut too short by the manufacturer. As we were fixing that issue, we installed this cyclone sewer vent cover help get rid of the black tank odors.

Water Filter

Water filters are a must! A good tip is to use a magic marker (e.g. Sharpie) to write the date that the RV water filter is replaced.

Garden Hose Y Splitter

When staying long-term at an RV park, we have used this two-way connect to link our black flush hose and fresh water house to the water source so that we don’t have to keep disconnecting the hoses. Be sure and add a check valve to the line prevent back flow.

Shower Head

This sprayer isn’t anything fancy, but it is better than bathroom shower head that came with our RV.

Blow-Out For Winterizing

We have a video on how we winterized our RV. Kasie makes both the “antifreeze” and “compressor” methods both look easy. If you use the “compressor method,” you will need this blow-out adapter.

Water Flow Meter

We use this Save-A-Drop monitor how much water goes into our fresh tank. It is also useful for monitoring how much water is in the black tank when we are cleaning it out. We own two of these devices.
